The StellaPro Reflex lights are “Continuous Strobe Hybrid” LED lights. They allow you to do constant light, as you might do for video, or using digital burst mode you can use the lights like you would a flash. Technically, these are not flashes, they are LED lights, but they allow you to over-charge the LED and release all of that charge as a burst of light, a burst that can be up to 1 stop brighter than the constant light.

And that constant light isn’t just some weak modeling light, like you might have in a standard studio monolight. These are bright, very bright.

After doing that deep dive review I was impressed. I mean, no product is everything we want, and there’s definitely a wishlist I have in my head for these lights, but for me the pros outweighed the cons.

And now StellaPro has made some interesting changes…

First, they consolidated the Reflex line into one model, eliminating the standard Reflex (no S), and leaving only the Reflex S. There is a Reflex Studio too, but the light head in that model is the Reflex S. Secondly, they’ve increased both the continuous and burst power 50%, doubled the runtime, and made the light 50% faster – now delivering 30 fps of full power bursts without missing a burst.

How much more do these upgraded lights cost you ask? Well, it’s not more expensive. It’s not even the same price. The upgraded lights are almost $250 cheaper! It actually feels weird writing that. An already good product is made better and they charge less? What the hell is the world coming to.

The StellaPro Reflex S lights are now $849, and with the added power they’re a pretty damn good deal – that is if they live up to the claims.

Today we are going to test this new upgraded hardware, which comes in the form of a larger battery handle, and a firmware update to the light head.

The Reflex Lights I will be using in this show were sent to me by Stella Pro Lights for the purpose of that original review show back in June, and the upgraded battery handles were sent to me for the review of the upgrade. Let me be clear though, they have not paid me further and this is not a sponsored review. I am free to have and state any opinions that I have, and StellaPro doesn’t get to see this show before it goes live. This is just my honest opinion based on what I might look for in a portable light.

Since then, I’ve been able to see the lights, and meet the people from StellaPro a few times, including at NAB 2022. Every time, I was struck by how kind the staff were, and how passionate about this product they were. Yeah, they’re supposed to be passionate about their product while showing it at a conference, but this felt so honest to me. While I was handling these lights it felt like I was holding something different than any other light I’ve played around with… in a very cool way.

If you’re not familiar with the StellaPro Reflex, let me summarize for you. The StellaPro Reflex is a “Continuous Strobe Hybrid”, meaning it does both Constant Light or Digital Burst. These LED lights allow you to do constant light like any LED, and I am not talking about a simple modeling light like you have in a standard studio monolight. These are constant LED lights suitable for video use. The Digital Burst mode allows you to use the lights like you would a flash, but these are not flashes. Again, they are LED lights, but they allow you to charge the LED and release all of that charge as a burst of light, a burst that can be up to 1 stop brighter than the constant light. Hopefully the phrase “Continuous Strobe Hybrid” makes a bit more sense now.

After meeting the StellaPro Lights folks, they offered to send me some of the gear for a review, and I jumped at the chance. They ended up sending me a 2 Light Kit, including 2 Stella Pro Reflex S lights
along with various accessories and cables, and today we are going to put them to use.

I do want to make a few things clear for this show…

This is an honest, unsponsored review.

The Stella Pro Lights I’m using in this show were sent to me by Stella Pro Lights (and Light & Motion) for the purpose of this review, but this is not a paid ad. I am free to have and state any opinions I have, and Stella Pro doesn’t get to see this before it goes live.

Also, If you want a crazy technical review – that’s not me.

I’m not going to measure actual Kelvin, CRI, and TLCI, etc. If you want technical reviews on any gear, I’d suggest checking out Photo Joseph, Curtis Judd, Gerald Undone, or one of the many people that do that way better than I ever could. I don’t know if any of those YouTubers have reviewed these lights, but they do great content.

What I want to see is how these lights work for someone like me. I’m not a person that uses constant light or flash daily. I am a concert photographer. I do shoot Meet & Greets, Portraits and Promos, but I don’t normally use studio type lights. I have been able to get by on my Canon Speedlights, and even then I’m not a person that uses constant light or flash daily.

So, these are just my opinions based on how I shoot.

This show will divided into 3 parts: Getting to know the gear, the unboxing and gear details, and shooting with lights. Finally, I’ll close it out with my thoughts.

When I first saw the Platyball, way back at Photoshop World 2019, I knew it was something unique. Even back then it worked perfectly, and it was just a prototype. Then at WPPI 2020, or what I refer to as the before times, I had a chance to talk to the creator of both the Platypod and the Platyball, Larry Tiefenbrunn – or “Dr. T”.

Over the last few years, I have become friends with Larry, and he has even been a guest on the show before. I’m also a fan of his first major product, the Platypod. In fact I keep one in the studio next to me at all times because I use it for mounting things in a pinch. Platyball however is different. Platypod arguable created the plate type mount category, and the way I saw it at the time the main competition was small tripods, like the bendable Joby styles that every company was making. Playball is entering a space that is very saturated. There are more ball heads, in more price ranges, than I can keep up with. Still, I see the Platyball as having a ton of opportunity in front of it.

While every company touts their ball head as the best, in most cases they are more similar to each other than not. The base mounts on the tripod, and the ball has a post that sticks up. There are usually multiple knobs, for loosening and adjusting the camera angle, panning features etc., and they almost all require holding the camera with one hand while you control those knobs. Those that are more expensive often have bubble levels that allow you to level the base, the part that is screwed to the tripod, but then, technically, the ball could be adjusted to mess up that ‘level’ status. Platyball says they turn the ball head upside down.

With Platyball, the ball is on the bottom, that is what attaches to the tripod. The main ‘head’ part is on top. This means that regardless of the levelness of the tripod itself, and the angle of the ball, the part of the Platyball your camera attaches to can be leveled independently. That means the panning feature is level independent of the mount. I should note that there are two versions of the Platyball, the Ergo and the Elite. The Ergo doesn’t have a level, although both models come with a mounting plate for your camera that has a bubble level on it. For the Ergo I found myself using the level in my Canon camera. The Elite, on the other hand, has a built-in electronic level – and it’s even user calibrate-able.

The other unique thing about the Platyball, and the feature that has me wanting one to replace my Acratech, is that it’s usable one-handed. You can hold the Platyball, press the tighten or loosen buttons, and adjust your camera easily. Plus, because the camera is mounted to the same part, not the ball below, it’s all one-handed.

As Platyball progressed closer to shipment, Platypod sent me pre-release copies of both the Platyball Ergo and Elite to test out. I should add that I am not normally a huge tripod / ball head user. As a live music photographer, we don’t take tripods into the photo pit, but like every photographer there are those times I need a good setup. I own a large Induro, and small Gitzo traveler for those times. While I had these two Platyballs I wanted to get a quick feel for them. The video starts with an unboxing, and then to test these Platyballs I decided to take a day hike up a local mountain. This is not an in-depth review, by the way. These were pre-release models and all I was going for was seeing what my first impressions of them were. I also reported back any issues I found, so they could address them before actual release.

Availability of the Platyball is set to be as follows, although, again, these are in development to the last minute, so these timeframes could change. According to Platyball, they anticipate shipping to Kickstarter backers soon, possibly by the end of October, 2021 – continuing into Nov, Dec and Jan. Indiegogo backers and retail should be available in late March. I think it may be possible that they open up pre-orders for the public in early 2022, but I would guess that depends on the rest of the production schedules.

I’ve got new toys! Today we take a look at the new MagSafe@ Mounts from Moment.

I love the idea of MagSafe®, and in fact still own a 2015 MacBook Pro, partially because I have never wanted to move from the MagSafe® power connector to USB-C. When I first heard the rumors that iPhone 12 might include MagSafe® I was excited for what accessories might come from it, and when that came true I was excited to buy some.

My first MagSafe® accessory was the Apple clear case, but I hated the white ring that hides the magnets, so I went back to my normal route of using a thin clear case that wasn’t MagSafe. That worked fine with my second accessory – the Apple charging pad.

The charging pad was ‘cool’, but it didn’t work as well as expected. Removing the phone from the pad would always end up with the pad dropping on the nightstand. There are weighted bases you can buy, but that wasn’t for me.

Next was the Belkin 3-in-1 Wireless Charger with MagSafe®, and both my wife and I love those. I do wish the magnets were a little stronger, as I had to switch back to an Apple MagSafe® case to get a strong enough grip, but I highly recommend these. I wish I had reviewed them, but didn’t think of it before installing them.

The accessories I have been most excited for were the Moment MagSafe® Mounts. When these were announced they looked and sounded perfect for so many situations, and they would solve a few real world issues I was having.

Moment is a company known for great products, and while I have never owned their mobile lenses, they have a reputation as the best you can get, with a unique mounting system using their cases.

For their entry into MagSafe®, Moment has a lot of options:

I am starting with two – for now…

The Pro Tripod – Landscape and Portrait – for MagSafe®, and the Car Vent Mount for MagSafe®.

The Pro Tripod for MagSafe® (Landscape & Portrait)

I wanted this for the podcast. I wanted a way to mount my iPhone as my second camera – either shooting from the side or as a top-down camera – as seen in the video for this review. My existing clamp style made adjusting the phone angle MUCH harder, where MagSafe® allows me to spin the phone as needed. There have also been times the phone would go to sleep, or require me to grab it quickly for some reason – like an incoming call during recording – and the clamp style mount would end up locking the phone or take a screenshot!

Unboxing

The packaging is very clean and minimalistic. A recycled feeling thin black cardboard with interlocking tabs to close it.

Inside the first thing you see is a card describing the features, from the cold shoe, to the thumbscrew that allows the cold shoe to rotate and then be locked into place. It also points out the M Force Magnets and the 1/4” 20 threads at the bottom.

The only other thing in the box is the mount itself, and there’s a ton to like about this thing:

Pros

VERY well built
Very impressed with the machining
Long attachment support for portrait mode
Cold shoe is centered connected with a thumbscrew to rotate it
Magnets are CRAZY strong
Nice rubber surface to protect the phone

Cons

NONE – except for my buying experience

More on that in a minute

The bottom line is that I love this thing and want more of these types of accessories.

Car Vent Mount for MagSafe

I have been using a CD player Clamp Style mount for a long time, but I am on my second one because they keep getting loose over time and sliding out of the CD slot. The phone is basically drooping, and I have to keep pushing it back in. Still, I like that position – in my car at least. It’s right in front of my hand, if I need to touch the screen.  I knew I wanted a mount for the center console, not the driver’s door side as I have seen some people do.

That’s where the Vent Mount comes in. I have tried these style mounts before, meaning the cheap ones that come with a small metal disk to place inside your case. They were horrible. The magnets are weak, and they mount to the vent in a way that never seems solid. One of them seemed to bend the vent bars enough I worried it would permanently mess up the look.

This mount solves a lot of those issues – but not all of them.

Unboxing

Same as with the The Pro Tripod, the packaging is minimalistic. Same style black box, and inside there is a card. In this case, there’s not much to talk about on the card. It has the same magnets, and there are some rubber grips to hold onto the vent. Here the packaging changes a bit. There is a cover showing some padded foam like paper through a small window. Removing that gets you to the mount itself.

This car vent mount is the best one of these I have tried, as far as holding onto the vent, and it has a lot going for it.

Pros

Fit my vents pretty well
MUCH more solidly built than others I’ve tried
Mounts firmly, and doesn’t slip when driving – and I tried to get it to drop
Mount has a thick rubberized set of teeth
Doesn’t appear to bend the vent

Cons

Doesn’t work well on all vents
Phone blocks things on the dash
The phone angle is limited to the vent movement
I wish it had a slight left-to-right action

Bottom line: I like the Car Vent Mount a lot, and I think I will get used to the angle issue.

The Buying Experience

I won’t go into all the details here, but if you’re buying any product or service, it’s important to understand how their support works.

All companies, or products, can have issues at some point, what matters is how a company handles those issues. In Moment’s case they don’t have phone support – at all. Not for tech support, or billing. Everything is done via email, and in my case, that didn’t work. I had a total of 7 unanswered emails, an unanswered Tweet where had I tagged the company and the CEO, and a mysterious duplicate charge for the full order amount 3 minutes after an email telling me a refund had been processed. It showed up on my credit card as pending, and then it took 4 days to disappear from the card.

My final impression is this… their communication leaves a lot to be desired. It’s OK to not have a phone number, but if you are going to only use email, and they have a contact form on their site too, then you need to reply to those emails.

Would I recommend these products?

100% yes, if the product is listed as in stock and shipping.

Personally, I will never do another pre-order through Moment again. I didn’t enjoy the experience at all. These were not Kickstarter projects, where supporters know they are backing a product at a very early level, often while its still in the design stages. Ordering a pre-order from a company’s own website, a product they had announced a while before and then opened for orders – with a ship date – is different, at least to me.

At some point I may buy the multi-threaded mount, as it looks like it could be very cool in certain applications.

If you are into photography at all, then the odds are good that you’ve heard of Rick Sammon. Rick is one of those photographers and educators that can help anyone become a better photographer, regardless of genre. That is a big part of the reason that this will be Rick’s fifth time on Behind the Shot. The next closest is Don Komarechka with 3 times, and I am planning on having him on again as soon as his new book comes out.

Rick Sammon is a legend, and I mean that in every sense of the word. Every time I talk with him I am amazed at how much he enjoys what he does, his photography, educating others, from amateurs to pros, and living life. Along with his wife Susan, Rick is honestly one of the best there is, and I learn something every time we chat. It’s no wonder he is affectionately known as The Godfather of Photography.

An award winning photographer, Rick is a Canon Explorer of Light. A tireless, prolific and inspirational image-maker, he is one of the most active photographers I know. His enthusiasm for digital imaging is contagious, making photography fun, creative, exciting and rewarding for others. He even does private coaching. Yeah, private coaching from Rick Sammon. That would be awesome. In the education area, Rick has almost 20 classes on KelbyOne, not to mention a wonderful interview he did with Kalebra Kelby (who in her own right is an amazing photographer that does stuff with an iPhone I wish I could do).

I am always impressed how “Creative People” seem to be creative in many areas. Rick has authored more photography books than anyone I know. His most recent book, “Photo Quest: Discovering Your Photographic & Artistic Voice“, is a photography book… without pictures, and it is one of the best books on photography I have seen. I am so honored to have a small contribution in that book, along with the previous book “Photo Therapy Motivation and Wisdom: Discovering the Power of Pictures” – yeah, he has so many it’s hard to count. Being able to contribute just the small bits I did to these books is very special to me.

An avid podcaster, Rick has now moved into the world of live streaming too, using his Photo Therapy Facebook Group as the outlet.

I asked Rick once how he describes his photography, and he answered “evolving,” I kinda dig that description. He even hesitates to categorize his work. He does it all, and enjoys the freedom of not specializing.

With nearly 40 years of experience, this self-taught photographer has many accomplishments – and as Rick suggests, “When you are through changing, you are through”. One other thing needs to be said about Rick… as mentioned above Rick’s partner is his wife Susan. While Rick seems to get the bulk of the attention, Susan deserves her own. Behind every successful person there is often a spouse, or special person that helps push them, guide them, and in many ways drive the success. That is Susan. She is there on his workshops, and she is often a co-author on his books. I am thankful Rick has such a talented partner and look forward to what these two do next.

Back in February of 2019 I was at WPPI in Las Vegas, and I was at the Canon booth interviewing them about the EOS R and other new products. While there, I got into a conversation Canon’s Jim Booth about printers. During that chat I explained that I am big advocate for printing your images. There is something magical about holding a physical print, a feeling you just don’t get holding a smart phone or table, let alone seeing an overly compressed image on those social media platforms – yes, Facebook, I mean you.

At that time I owned a Canon Pixma PRO-100 printer, which I mostly liked. Jim suggested I would like an imagePROGRAF PRO-1000 much more, and he offered to send me one for testing and review. For the purpose of a review I wanted to be sure I was free to say anything I wanted, good or bad, so I offered to send to printer back when I was done, but was told I could keep it regardless. For me, being able to fully honest is the key, and them telling me to keep it no matter what was interesting…. it seemed like they already knew what I would think.

During the setup, test prints, and testing of the user experience I quickly realized how little I knew about printing. This would be my third photo printer, but I was clearly in need of some additional info. I could read the specs to you all day long, but you could read those yourself, not to mention that there are a ton of reviews based on specs. I wanted to go more towards the real world experience of using a printer in this pro category vs a more prosumer product. That’s when I decided to get Jim on to give an explanation of the feature of the PRO-100, going beyond specs alone, and even just talking about the pro printer world as a whole.

One other area I wanted more info on came up during the test print phase of the review. I printed all the test images on both my Pixma PRO-100 and the imagePROGRAF PRO-1000, and on one specific photo something weird happened. I printed it to a matte paper, but on the PRO-1000 it came out looking completely different, and it even had a sheen to it. So while the PRO-100 copy was the expected flatter appearance, the PRO-1000 copy had a much more noticeable pop of color. It took me a bit to reverse engineer why, and I realized that the paper type selection suggested for that paper on the PRO-1000 most likely caused the printer to use the Chroma Optimizer. That made me really start looking at my test papers, the suggested settings for those papers, and why I was using those papers with a specific image. I needed a paper expert, which led me to contact Drew Hendrix, the President of Red River Paper. Drew and I spent good amount of time talking about the role paper plays in being satisfied with a print.

I have been testing the Think Tank Photo Spectral 10 shoulder bag for the past few months, and in this video I run through the features I like, along with a few things I would change. The bottom line is that I really like the Spectral 10 for those times you need a shoulder style bag. It’s extremely comfortable, even when you’re carrying 2 bodies all day, and the latch system is awesome. I still don’t think there is a single “perfect bag” that will satisfy every user, but along with my Think Tank Airport International V2 the Spectral 10 is now one of my go-to bags. Recently I had the opportunity to test out the MindShift Gear Backlight 26L backpack. In this video I run through the features I liked, along with a few things I’d change. This backpack was comfortable to wear all day, and the entry system is fantastic. I am always looking for the perfect bag, and while “perfect” may not exist, the MindShift Gear Backlight 26L is now my fave bag – along with my Think Tank Airport International V2.
